Verstappen beats Hamilton to French GP pole with stunning lap

The Red Bull driver had already set a lap good enough for provisional pole position and went even better on his final flying lap of Q3 with a 1m29.990s as the only man to dip under the 1m30s bracket. Despite appearing to struggle for pace throughout all three practice sessions, Hamilton saved his best lap until the very end to secure a spot on the front row of the grid alongside his main championship rival. Hamilton ultimately ended up 0.258s adrift of Verstappen, who claimed his second pole of the season and the fifth of his career.
