Hamilton fastest but Vettel closes gap in first Mexican GP practice

Lewis Hamilton only just set the fastest lap in the opening practice session for the Mexican Grand Prix on Friday after Ferrari set competitive times and closed in on rivals Mercedes. The defending champion, embroiled in a trying title battle this season, was only 0.079 seconds quicker than Sebastian Vettel. Kimi Raikkonen, running a different programme to his teammate, was next. Force India looked strong with Sergio Perez fourth ahead of teammate Nico Hulkenberg. In sixth was Williams' Valtteri Bottas followed by championship leader Nico Rosberg, 0.759 seconds off the pace, as the German opted not to run the quicker soft tyres.
