Sebastian Vettel happy to salvage P3
Japanese Grand Prix – Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel said that P3 was the maximum he and the team could have achieved in the race, as Mercedes just had a little bit too much pace. Having started the race from P4, Vettel found himself running second after Turn 2. He managed to outdrag Valtteri Bottas down into Turn 1, before inheriting second from Nico Rosberg when the Mercedes driver was pushed wide by Lewis Hamilton. From there, Vettel held P2 until the mid point of the race. Heading into the second pitstop phase, Rosberg had cut Vettel's lead over him to just 1.7 seconds and then dived into the pits to attempt the undercut.
