Alonso tops first free practice in Canada

Fernando Alonso was the surprise pace setter in opening practice ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix. Alonso traded the top spot with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton throughout the 90 minute session, jumping to the top of the time sheets late on with a best lap of 1:17.238, a mere hundredth of a second faster than the 2008 champion. Current championship leader Nico Rosberg made up the top four in the second Mercedes, a tenth shy of Alonso’s session topping time. Sebastian Vettel was fourth fastest in the leading Red Bull, one spot ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who improved in the dying moments of the session.
