10/08/2024 at 11:4510/08/2024 at 11:35 Damon Hill was the moral victor of the 1997 Hungarian Grand Prix held on this day 27 years ago, just missing out on a sensational win with his Arrows-Yamaha. The reigning world champion, who had qualified third at the Hungaroring, was out in front heading to the checkered flag when a hydraulic issue put him out of contention on the final lap of the race and handed the win to Jacques Villeneuve's Williams. Hill had endured a dismal year with Arrows, but second place was unfortunately no consolation for what should have been a major upset victory.
