Suzuka FP1: Hamilton and Mercedes set the pace

Four times Japanese Grands Prix winner Lewis Hamilton on Friday showed the speed he has in his Mercedes by topping the opening practice session of the weekend ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas at Suzuka. Hamilton set the pace on Pirelli’s soft rubber finishing nearly half a second quicker than Bottas, though the Briton was fortunate to avoid a high-speed incident early on in the session with Pierre Gasly. Fortunately, Hamilton was quick enough to avoid the Toro Rosso driver, prompting a Stewards investigation.
