Honda says new engine has 'exceeded' Mercedes 2020 unit

Honda F1 technical director Toyoharu Tanabe says the Japanese manufacture's new power unit has surpassed the performance level of last year's Mercedes engine. Following its decision to exit Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season, Honda brought forward the development of an all-new power unit for its swansong year in Grand Prix racing. The performances in Bahrain last weekend of Red Bull and AlphaTauri who topped the timesheet on the final day of pre-season testing suggest that Honda's unit has taken a step forward, and Tanabe confirmed the engine's gains.
