A promising launch but a dismal season for Ferrari

Later today, Ferrari will pull the covers off the car it hopes will finally defeat the supremacy of its arch-rival, Mercedes. Back in 1973, the House of Maranello also had high expectations for its season when it rolled out its contender under the watchful eye of Enzo Ferrari - seen here at the forefront of the pic flanked by son Piero Ferrari. Unfortunately, the self-supporting chassis created by designer John Thompson would prove uncompetitive from the outset, even in the capable hands of the great Jacky Ickx. There would be no wins for the Scuderia that year, but the winds of change would start blowing at Maranello over the summer of '73.
