Vandoorne: Missing Q3 aids race strategy

– McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne believes missing out on a spot in Q3 at the Japanese Grand Prix is beneficial, as it permits him free tyre choice for the opening stint of the race.Vandoorne provisionally held a space inside the top 10 but was bumped out during the closing stages of Q2 by team-mate Fernando Alonso, who went just 0.029s quicker.As a result, Vandoorne qualified in 11th place, but will move up to ninth on the grid due to penalties for Alonso and Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen."That was actually a pretty good session for me," said Vandoorne."Not getting through into Q3 isn't actually that bad because it means I can start the race on a new tyre...
