Hamilton hails ‘surprise’ 70th career pole

Lewis Hamilton has poured praise on Mercedes for turning around its set-up to produce front-running performance to storm to a 70th career Formula 1 pole position, while main title rival Sebastian Vettel starts from last place due to an engine problem before qualifying. The F1 championship leader blitzed the times on his opening run with a new lap record of 1m 30.076s at the Sepang International Circuit and was able to hold on to pole position after Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen narrowly missed out by 0.055s on his final flying lap in Q3.
