Daniel Ricciardo handed five-place grid drop for gearbox change

Red Bull Racing has changed Daniel Ricciardo’s gearbox for the Australian Grand Prix, giving the driver a five-place grid penalty. The home favourite crashed into the barrier mid-way through Q3 after a spin at Turn 14, with his car backing into the wall. He was yet to put in a timed lap before the crash, meaning he ended qualifying in 10th position. Red Bull changed his gearbox ahead of the 2017 season opener in Melbourne, giving him a grid drop. Gearboxes are meant to last for six consecutive events and if that rule is broken, a penalty is applied. Ricciardo will now start the Australian GP in 15th place.
