John Surtees dies aged 83

Former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died, his family announced on Friday. He was 83. Surtees was Formula 1 world champion in 1964 with Ferrari and was the only man to have won both the F1 and motorcycling grand prix world championships. Surtees was admitted to hospital in February with an existing respiratory condition and, after a period in intensive care, he died peacefully on Friday afternoon, his family said. "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our husband and father, John Surtees CBE," his family said in a statement. "John was a loving husband, father, brother and friend.
