With Mercedes the only team to use the super-soft rubber in the morning – allowing Rosberg to emerge seventh tenths clear of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in FP1 - it chose to focus on longer runs in the afternoon as its rivals got to grips with the 'red' tyres in soaring temperatures.
