The new Qualifying format – What's changed?

Australian Grand Prix – Melbourne sees the introduction of a new qualifying format which will be used throughout 2016. So, what's different? For the last ten years, a three stage knock-out type qualifying format has been used. This format will be kept in 2016, with a few changes introduced. Here's how it's laid out: Q1: 16 minutes duration. All 22 drivers participating. After seven minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds thereafter, the slowest drivers are eliminated one by one until session end. Seven drivers get eliminated, with 15 drivers moving on to Q2.
