Ricciardo pleased, surprised by first front row start since China 2014

Daniel Ricciardo was pleased to secure his best grid slot in almost 18 months in Singapore as he finished second in Saturday's qualifying session. Ricciardo made the most of Mercedes' struggles to lead Red Bull's fight against Ferrari for pole position, but could not rival former teammate Sebastian Vettel at the very top of the timesheets, falling half a second short in Q3. However, the Australian did enough to secure a spot on the front row alongside Vettel, marking his first since the 2014 Chinese Grand Prix.
