Michelin confirms 2017 tyre supplier bid
Mercedes AMG Petronas Michelin has confirmed that it has submitted a bid to supply tyres to Formula 1 from the start of the 2017 season. Michelin last competed in the sport in 2006, when it was engaged in a tyre war with rivals Bridgestone. Since its withdrawal at the end of that campaign, Formula 1 has adopted a single tyre supplier, with Pirelli replacing Bridgestone in 2011. Pirelli's current contract expires at the end of 2016 and the FIA opened up a tender process for the next three-year deal, running from 2017 to 2019. Michelin has submitted a proposal for Formula 1 to race on 18-inch rims, compared to the 13-inch ones which the sport currently uses.
