Alonso beats Mercedes in Sinagpore first practice

Fernando Alonso emerged as the quickest driver in the first practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix on Friday trumping the dominant Mercedes by a tenth. Lewis Hamilton led within the Mercedes camp but was only 0.027 seconds faster than teammate and championship rival Nico Rosberg, Defending champion Sebastian Vettel was fourth, eight-tenths off the pace but more worryingly the power unit in his Red Bull failed moments after practice ended. Vettel is using a new chassis this weekend in an attempt to improve his performance this season, at least relative to his teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who ended the session in fifth, a second slower than the top time.
