Kovalainen makes first Q3 appearance since 2009
Reeled in by Lotus to replace the injured Kimi Raikkonen for the final two races of the season, Heikki Kovalainen produced an impressive performance at the United States Grand Prix to qualify in eighth place on Saturday. Having last raced in 2012 with minnows Caterham, the Finn’s only on-track activity this season has been the six practice sessions that he took part in with the same team. But the 32-year-old called upon all his experience, of over a hundred Grands Prix, added with the benefit of having raced with Lotus in its Renault guise in 2007 and the comfort of having a race engineer from his McLaren stint, to produce a decent weekend so far.
