Alonso passes Schumacher to become F1's top scorer

With his fourth place at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, Fernando Alonso became the highest points-scorer in Formula 1, displacing seven-time Michael Schumacher from the top of the list. The Spaniard has scored 1,571 points in F1, five more than the German, but has been helped largely by the new points scoring system which awards 25 to the race winner. “To see my name leading the points record for a sport like Formula 1 is something I never imagined. Thanks to everyone!” he said. In contrast, Schumacher mostly raced in an era when a win secured only ten points, which can now be achieved with a fifth place.
