2014 calendar: 21 races, 5 engines, Mexico and no Big Apple

The BBC shared a provisional 2014 calendar the FIA circulated to the teams ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. It's a provisional calendar which means that the FIA have to approve it at the next World Motor Sport Council meeting in September. There are provisional races that are subject to confirmation such as Korea, Russia and a new Mexican Grand Prix but what is obviously missing is the proposed grand prix in New Jersey. If all the races were confirmed, this would represent a 21-race schedule, the longest in Formula 1 yet, and it brings to mind the simple notion that if the series is to face its longest season yet, they do so in 2014 with only five engines for the entire season....
