Alonso puts Ferrari on top in rain-hit first practice

Fernando Alonso emerged as the quickest driver in first practice for the Belgian Grand Prix on Friday in a session interrupted by intermittent rain. The Spaniard clocked a time of 1 minute 55.198 seconds around the Spa Francorchamps circuit, marginally ahead of the Force India pair of Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil. Even when the rain had receded during the 90-minute outing, the sporadic damp patches around the 7-kilometre track made it tricky for the drivers to negotiate the corners cleanly. Championship leader Sebastian Vettel, who posted the sixth fastest time, spun twice during his runs when he ran over the wet parts of the circuit. Luckily, no one ended in the barriers.
